A spacer is always recommended while using puffer for people having difficulty in breath coordination, regardless of whether using puffer daily or during an emergency. A spacer is a clear plastic container shaped like a tube with a mouthpiece or mask at one end and an insert cavity for an inhaler/puff at the other. Spacers help to get medication such as in respiratory ailments into your lungs. The medication is ‘fired’ from the puffer into the spacer device and is then inhaled gradually through the mouthpiece or a face mask. Why Use Spacer With Inhaler?
A spacer is a holding chamber usually made of plastic and shaped like a football or tube. It makes it easier to take asthma or COPD medication from the type of puffer called an MDI (metered-dose inhaler). Metered-dose inhalers can spray medicine as fast as 60 miles per hour, causing the medicine to hit the back of the patient’s throat or roof of his mouth. The spacer holds the aerosol discharged from the MDI in suspension for 2-3 seconds, thereby reducing the need to co-ordinate the aerosol discharge from the MDI and Inhalation and permitting time for the patient to inhale slowly. When the patient inhales through the Mouth Piece of the Spacer the valve opens and he breathes in the aerosol from the MDI.
